"" Former USPTO Judge Dr. Joan Ellis Joins Proskauer Rose in Washington, D.C.
January 22, 2009 (Washington, D.C.) - Proskauer Rose LLP, a global law firm with 800 lawyers worldwide, announced that Dr. Joan Ellis, a former judge at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and scientist specializing in genetic research, will join its Washington, D.C. office as a senior counsel in the Patent Law Practice Group.
As an Administrative Patent Judge on the USPTO's Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, Dr. Ellis adjudicated the majority of biotech patent interferences handled by the USPTO during her tenure. Most recently a lawyer at Venable, she will focus her practice on patent prosecution, patent interferences and litigation, with a particular emphasis in biotechnology and the pharmaceutical and life sciences industries.
"Joan is a tremendous strategic addition to our Washington-based and national patent litigation groups," said Colin Sandercock, co-head of Proskauer's Washington, D.C. office and co-head of the firm's Life Sciences Practice Group. "Her background as a lawyer, a patent judge and a scientist will bring a multi-dimensional perspective to a practice that continues to grow across the firm.
Moreover, her expertise in handling biotech interferences will be a great asset to our interference practice."
Dr. Ellis is the latest addition to Proskauer's patent and life sciences groups, following Jennifer Camacho, an experienced biotechnology and intellectual property lawyer, who joined the firm as a partner in Boston.
The firm's Patent Law Practice Group forms a significant part of its Intellectual Property Practice Group and includes over 60 lawyers who specialize in patent and technology related litigation, patent counseling, licensing and technology transfer and patent procurement.
As a judge at the USPTO, Dr. Ellis authored over 250 ex parte decisions and over 50 inter partes interference decisions and was responsible for deciding appeals involving molecular biology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostic assays and medical devices.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, she spent over a decade conducting research into genetic material, particularly in the areas of molecular biology, biochemistry and immunology. She holds a patent directed to an antigenic malaria gene and was a member of a New York University scientific team to that produced a malaria vaccine.
Dr. Ellis received her J.D. from George Washington University, her Ph.D. from New York University School of Medicine and her B.A. from Southern Illinois University. ""
